Sleep Apnea Treatment at Be More Sleep Center

Sleep Apnea Treatment at Be More Sleep Center

A major fact we believe at Be More Sleep Center is that quality sleep is the foundation of a positive, healthy life. Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that can silently steal your peace and cause more severe health issues if left untreated, which is why we’re here to change that narrative.

Under the expert guidance of Dr. Jessica Wears, we focus on uncovering and treating the underlying causes of your sleep disruptions. Our patient-centered approach isn’t just about managing symptoms; it’s about giving you a fulfilling life through restful, rejuvenating sleep.

Let us guide you toward the restful sleep and good health you deserve.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common but serious sleep disorder where the airway becomes partially or completely blocked during sleep. This blockage happens when the muscles or soft tissues behind the throat relax too much, leading to repeated interruptions in breathing.

Each pause in breathing can last from some seconds up to a minute and can happen several times throughout the night, interrupting your sleep and leaving you tired and unrested.

Types of Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

The most common form. OSA happens when the throat muscles relax and block the airway during sleep;

Central Sleep Apnea

This type is less common and more severe. It happens when the brain fails to forward the needed signals to the muscles in charge of breathing;

Mixed Sleep Apnea

This is the most severe form and requires comprehensive treatment. It is a combination of obstructive and central sleep apnea.

We focus on treating obstructive sleep apnea using non-invasive methods like oral appliance therapy (OAT) and lifestyle modifications. For more severe cases, we partner with trusted sleep experts to provide the holistic care you need.

What are Some Common Causes of OSA?

Certain factors increase the likelihood of developing Obstructive Sleep Apnea, including:

Obesity

Being excessively overweight, especially around the neck area, can put pressure on the airway, increasing the risk of obstruction;

Smoking

Smoking can increase inflammation and fluid retention in the airway, intensifying OSA symptoms;

Family History

If sleep apnea runs in your family, there’s a high chance that you will also develop the condition.

How We Diagnose Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Baltimore, MD

Initial Consultation

Your journey to peaceful sleep begins with a thorough consultation. During this initial visit, Dr. Wears and her team will discuss your existing symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle factors that may contribute to obstructive sleep apnea. We’ll also conduct a physical examination to identify any potential airway issues that could be affecting your sleep quality.

At Home Sleep Test (HST)

The next step in diagnosing OSA is an at-home sleep test (HST). This convenient, non-invasive test allows you to monitor your sleep patterns as you lay in bed. We use the advanced WatchPAT device, which tracks your breathing, heart rate, and oxygen levels throughout the night. This valuable data helps us accurately assess the severity of your condition with your physician and tailor your treatment plan accordingly.

Further Evaluation

In more complex or severe cases, we may recommend additional testing with a sleep specialist. We collaborate with a network of trusted, board-certified sleep professionals to ensure you receive comprehensive care. This partnership allows us to refer patients for more in-depth studies, such as in-lab polysomnography, providing an accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment plan.

How We Treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea:
Oral Appliance Therapy

Overview of Oral Appliance Therapy

We specialize in treating OSA using oral appliance therapy (OAT). This innovative, non-invasive solution involves wearing a custom-fitted oral appliance, similar to a mouthguard, while you sleep. The appliance gently repositions the jaw and tongue to maintain an open airway, preventing interruptions in breathing.

Benefits of OAT

Non-Invasive: Unlike surgical treatments, OAT is a non-invasive solution that doesn’t require any procedures or recovery time;

Comfortable: The appliance is customized to fit your mouth, ensuring a comfortable fit that doesn’t disrupt your sleep;

Easy to Use: OAT devices are simple to wear and maintain, making them a suitable and convenient option for long-term use;

Effective Alternative to CPAP: For patients who find continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy uncomfortable or difficult to use, OAT offers an effective, patient-friendly alternative;

Portable and Quiet: OAT devices are small, quiet, and easy to travel with, allowing you to be consistent with your treatment routine no matter where you are.

Treatment Process

Getting started with oral appliance therapy is a straightforward and personalized process.

Initial Fitting: During your first visit, Dr. Wears will take precise impressions or digital scans of your mouth to create your custom-fitted appliance;

Appliance Creation: Your oral appliance will be crafted utilizing advanced technology for a perfect fit and optimal comfort;

Follow-Up Visits: After receiving your appliance, we’ll schedule follow-up visits to ensure it fits properly and to make any necessary adjustments. Regular check-ups allow us to track your progress and make sure the treatment is working effectively.
